Chimi Chili Dog

When I first moved to California in the mid 80s, the Plaza Camino Real Mall in Carlsbad had a little place called The Great Hot Dog Experience. I don't know how long it had been there, but it wasn't there for very long.

They sold a hot dog called a Chimi Chili Dog. It was AWESOME!

I recreated it and make it once every couple of years. It's definitely not for those watching their weight. But if you want pure delicious junk food.... keep reading!

You'll need:

Hot dogs ~ I just use the store brand beef hot dogs that are usually on sale.
Chili ~ Your favorite
Cheese ~ I used colby jack... use whatever you like on a chili cheese dog.
Large flour tortillas
Your favorite Chili Dog Toppings... onions... jalapenos... ????
Your favorite Chimichanga Toppings... salsa... sour cream... salsa... ????
Oil for deep frying

Fry the hot dogs and heat up the chili.

Microwave the flour tortillas so they are nice and pliable.

Add some shredded cheese.

Then a fried hot dog.

Now some chili and onions and whatever else you'd like

Heat the oil to 350F

Put the Chimi Chili Dog into the oil, seam side down and hold it in place for a minute so it doesn't unroll.

Turn when golden to brown the other side.

Tip Chimi Chili Dog to drain oil from both ends and drain on rack.

Serve with your favorite chimichanga toppings.

Eat it with a fork and knife or pick it up and eat it like a burrito!

That looks so incredibly dangerous, yet so incredibly tempting...what's one time gonna hurt?! Great pictures, too...they're taunting me right now.

I've always been very traditional with my hot dogs, in fact, I never even used mustard, just ketchup. Just recently I have been using both Ketchup and Mustard. I have been interested in trying chili dogs after watching Tyler Florence make them and now that you posted these, I'm really tempted! I think I'd skip the deep frying because I'm just too lazy, but I think it would still be good if I skip that step.

Definitely not health food, but ohhh Steve would LOVE this. He eats hot dogs with Frito pie (his version is simply Fritos + Bush's chili). Thanks for showing me this, maybe I'll surprise him.

And hey, I know that mall! It used to be my mall when I lived in Vista/worked in Carlsbad until 2002. I don't know if this place was there the years I frequented the place.

Michele... for the full effect, you should fry them *evil grin*

Donna... they really are good!

So they probably have 1000 calories each, but I do have to see that they look so good for an occasional treat!

Spryte, this won't win anybody any points for health but I don't care, this would taste great!

Reminds me of Superbowl Sunday fare, served in Tijuana!

LOL! They would be great for football!
