Until the other night, the only waffles I ever made came out of a box in my freezer and I popped them into the toaster oven.
That has changed!
I just got a waffle iron! YAY!!
I wanted to make Shane's Belgian Waffles (check them out over at Culinary Alchemy)
While I was at work, I skimmed the ingredients and noted that I should have everything at home. YAY again!
So as soon as I got home I opened it up, washed it off and read the direction on how to operate the iron. (remember I've never actually made waffles before)
Ok... that looked easy enough... now on to the waffles!
Uh oh!! The batter needed to rest 1.5 hours or overnight!!!
Definitely NOT a work night dinner at my house. This would have to wait until the weekend.
What to do for dinner????
I had just had 15 pounds of beef tenderloin cut into gorgeous thick steaks... but I just wasn't feeling the beef...
Tawny brought home fundraiser Italian subs... meh...
I could make quesadillas... nah...
Ya know... the recipe that came with the iron, while claiming to be Plain Belgian Waffles, had no yeast... just baking powder.
I did need to get a feel for the iron. I certainly didn't want to start making waffles for the first time ever, with batter that had been in the works for 12 hours or more, only to ruin them due to lack of experience. And I didn't have any cool toppings anyway.
I made Plain Belgian (American) Waffles from the recipe that came with my VillaWare Belgian Waffler for dinner!
Plain Belgian Waffles
4 eggs, separate, room temperature
1 TBLS sugar
1/4 C butter, melted and cooled
1 C milk
1 tsp vanilla
2 C flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
Beat egg yolks and sugar in a bowl until light.
Add cooled, melted butter, milk and vanilla.
Add flour, baking powder and salt.
Beat well.
Beat egg whites until stiff and gently fold into batter.

Mine wouldn't get light... oh well...

Preheat the waffle iron & give it a little spritz with some cooking spray.
Pour in the batter. Ok... I need practice here.

They weren't all perfect... but they tasted great!!
I love homemade waffles. My girls love our Hello Kitty Waffle iron. I hope your next batch comes out great!

ReplyDeleteYeah and isn't it scary when it's seeping out the sides and sounds like the lid is going to blow off. Mine does it too, but whatever it's always yummy.

ReplyDeleteHeh, I don't think I've ever put just the right amount of batter in the iron. It's always too much or too little. But the end result is all that matters... well, if you ignore the mess. ;)

ReplyDeleteHomemade waffles are so good. Fresh and warm. I love the powdered sugar you have on yours. I usually use maple syrup but will have to try the powdered sugar next time.
